Our History

Founding and Early Years
Cotton & Sons Funeral Directors is the oldest surviving funeral home in Bristol, founded in 1855 by Alonzo Cotton. Originally a tinsmith by trade, Alonzo Cotton established the business to serve the local community's funeral needs. Over the years, Cotton & Sons became a trusted name in the city, known for its compassionate and professional services.

A Pioneering Bristolian
In 1877, Alonzo Cotton's life took a pivotal turn that would further cement his legacy in Bristol's history. That year, his wife suffered a serious fall down a flight of stairs. In a swift response, Alonzo used his horse and funeral cart to transport her to the Bristol Royal Infirmary (B.R.I.). This incident marked a significant moment in the city's history as it highlighted the urgent need for organised medical transportation services.

Contribution to St. John’s Ambulance Brigade
Inspired by his personal experience, Alonzo Cotton played a key role in establishing a branch of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade in Bristol. His dedication to the cause saw him rise to the position of Chief Superintendent. His efforts in promoting and organising emergency medical services were widely recognised, and he was awarded the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his contributions.

Generations of Family Operation
The Cotton family business was continually operated by three generations of the Cotton family, not only as funeral directors but also as a coffin factory. Cotton & Sons supplied many local funeral directors with coffins and caskets, solidifying their reputation for quality and reliability within the funeral industry.

Transition and Legacy
As the years passed, the family faced the challenge of succession. With no further heirs to take over the business, Michael and Lionel Cotton turned to long-time family friends and fellow funeral directors, E. C. Alderwick & Son. This decision ensured that the business remained within the realm of family ownership and avoided a corporate takeover, preserving the legacy and values established by Alonzo Cotton.

Today, Cotton & Sons Funeral Directors stands not only as a testament to its founder's pioneering spirit but also as a symbol of enduring dedication to the people of Bristol. The company remains a cornerstone of the Bristol community, upholding the values of compassion, reliability, and professionalism that Alonzo Cotton instilled from the very beginning.

Established in the late 1890s, G. Haskin & Son Family Funeral Directors began as a coal merchant business, supplying fuel to many areas in east Bristol. During the 1900s, the firm diversified into funeral directing, providing compassionate and professional services to the community. The Haskin family continued to operate the business until the early 1980s when it was taken over by E.C. Alderwick & Son Ltd. Despite the transition, the legacy of G. Haskin & Son's dedication to the Bristol community remains an integral part of its history.
